Elevate Your Music Experiences: A Student Guide to Piano Festivals and Exams

Beyond your regular lessons and practice, participating in piano festivals and exams offers a fantastic pathway to accelerating your learning and enhance your musical journey. These events are unique opportunities for growth, recognition, and performance experience.

What is the Difference Between a Festival and Exam?

Music festivals are friendly competitions where you and up to 15 other students each present one or more pieces for a small audience and an adjudicator (judge), with awards given for outstanding performances. Piano exams are typically formal, private assessments where you perform specific repertoire, technical exercises, and complete musical skills tests for a qualified examiner. Students will receive a final mark, an exam report and formal certification of your level.

Why Should You Consider Piano Festivals and Exams?

Goal Setting & Motivation: Participation in a festival encourages you to master a piece or two for performance, focusing on musicality, interpretation, and stage presence. Exams involve the preparation of a comprehensive music program for evaluation, which can be incredibly motivating,  helping you push through challenging pieces and technical exercises.

Constructive Feedback: After a festival performance, an adjudicator will provide comments and suggestions, often in an encouraging, workshop-style format. This can give you fresh perspectives on your pieces. Post-examination, students will receive a detailed report from a qualified examiner, highlighting strengths and offering specific areas for improvement. This objective feedback from an external expert is invaluable for refining your playing in future levels of studies.

Performance Experience & Confidence: Overcoming nerves and performing in front of an examiner or an audience (even a small one) builds incredible confidence. Each performance experience, whether on a festival stage or in an exam room, helps you develop poise, stage presence, and the ability to handle pressure.

Recognition & Achievement: Performing well at a festival or successfully completing an exam provides a sense of accomplishment and tangible proof of your hard work. Certificates, medals, and awards are wonderful motivators, although not a mandatory part of the experience. The true learning value lies in the process of preparation and the performance itself.

Hearing Other Musicians: At festivals, you get to listen to other students perform. This is a fantastic learning opportunity to hear different interpretations, instruments, and styles, inspiring your own musical journey.

How to Participate and Sign-up?

Getting involved is easier than you think! Our studio and your teacher will be there to guide you along the way.

Talk to Your Teacher. This is the first step! Your teacher will assess your readiness, recommend the appropriate festival category and exam level, and guide you through the preparation process.

Choose Your Path.

For Festivals, students are usually ready to compete when they reach RCM Level 1. For students that are keen to compete earlier, pieces at RCM Preparatory B level also qualify for festival performances. Your teacher will discuss which local or online festivals might be suitable, what pieces you can perform, and help you select the appropriate class (e.g., classical, contemporary, pop or composition).

or Exams, once a student has reached RCM level 2 or 3 studies, it is a good time to consider or begin planning for piano exams. It is not necessary to complete an RCM exam for every grade level, but it is recommended to build up your exam experience with at least one exam in a beginner level (1-4) and one exam in an intermediate level (5-7) before attempting exams at an advanced level (8 and up). Your teacher will guide you with the planning and preparation of required pieces, technical work, sight-reading, and ear tests.
