RCM Piano Lessons & Exam Preparation
Strong RCM preparation isn’t about memorizing pieces for exam day. It’s about developing the technique, reading, musicianship, and practice discipline that let a student perform confidently and understand the music they’re playing.
RCM Piano Exam Preparation in North York
Encore Piano Studios has prepared students for Royal Conservatory exams since 2001. Our Program Director, Bonnie Yam, holds an ARCT in both Piano Performance and Pedagogy and won an RCM Gold Medal for the highest pedagogy mark in her region. Every instructor on our roster is mentored by her, and the RCM program reflects that standard: structured preparation that builds musicians, not just exam candidates.
We teach RCM-focused lessons at our North York studio, at your home, or online for children, teens, and adults at every level from preparatory through ARCT.
RCM Preparation by Level

Beginners (Preparatory – Level 4)
The priority is strong fundamentals. There's no value in rushing toward an exam before basic reading, rhythm, and coordination are secure. Beginners build keyboard orientation, note reading, hand position, rhythm counting, and introductory technique all of which support RCM study at higher levels. Students completely new to piano can start with our beginner piano lessons and move into RCM-focused work when the foundations are ready.

Intermediate (Level 5 – Level 8)
Several skills have to start working together. The repertoire is more complex, technical demands increase, and students need stronger practice strategies. Intermediate preparation typically focuses on more demanding repertoire, greater hand independence, musical interpretation, performance confidence, and identifying weaknesses before they become obstacles at higher levels.

Advanced (Level 9 – ARCT)
Advanced study requires increasingly detailed work. Students may already understand the fundamentals but need more refined control, musical decision-making, tone, balance, pedaling, stylistic understanding, efficient practice, and consistency under pressure. Private instruction lets us spend every minute on the specific details that separate a good performance from a strong one.
Common RCM Preparation Mistakes
- Choosing repertoire before the technique is ready. If your fingers can’t play it comfortably, your interpretation can’t either.
- Practising pieces but ignoring technique. Scales, chords, and arpeggios aren’t optional they build the control that repertoire demands.
- Repeating mistakes at full speed. Slow, accurate practice that speeds up gradually beats fast, sloppy practice that never cleans up.
- Leaving difficult passages until late in the preparation. The hardest bars need the most repetitions. Start with them.
- Focusing only on notes instead of musical interpretation. Examiners listen for musicianship, not just accuracy.
- Neglecting sight reading and ear tests. These are scored. Students who prepare only repertoire and technique leave marks on the table.
Building an Effective RCM Practice Routine
Structured goals require structured practice. We teach students how to divide their time across technique, repertoire, difficult passages, sight reading, ear training, review of previously learned material, slow practice, and performance run-throughs.
The exact balance depends on the student. A student who struggles with a technical passage needs more time addressing the underlying technique. A student who plays accurately but lacks musical shape needs more work on interpretation and dynamics.
We provide a written practice plan each week, so students know exactly what to work on and how to spend their time.
