Kids Piano Lessons

Piano Lessons for Kids in North York
We’ve taught kids piano in North York since 2001. Whether your child is sitting at the keyboard for the first time or preparing for RCM exams, our instructors teach classical, pop, jazz, rock, film music, and musical theatre at every stage from beginner through advanced. One-on-one lessons happen at our studio, at your home, or online whichever keeps the routine going.
Why Parents Choose Our Kids Piano Lessons
Private instruction for each level
Every lesson is built around the student, not a fixed script. Beginners start with posture, rhythm, note reading, and keyboard awareness at their own pace. Advanced students work on technique, interpretation, and performance. No group pacing.
Teachers who still perform
Our instructors hold bachelor's and master's degrees in piano performance, pedagogy, and music education. Many are former Royal Conservatory students and active performing musicians. Every one of them is mentored by our Program Director, Bonnie Yam, who holds an ARCT in both Piano Performance and Pedagogy and won an RCM Gold Medal for the highest pedagogy mark in her region.
Royal Conservatory curriculum available
Families who want a graded path can follow the RCM framework: repertoire, technique, ear training, sight reading, and music theory, level by level. Families who want a broader program can choose a customized plan built around songs, creativity, and confidence.
Fun lessons with real progress
We include songs, games, listening work, and creative playing so each lesson stays engaging while building real skill. Children learn best when lessons feel rewarding.
Performance and growth opportunities
Students prepare for recitals, exams, school performances, and personal goals. These opportunities build comfort on stage and give families a clear sense of progress.
Signs Your Child Is Ready for Piano Lessons
- They keep asking about piano. Tapping rhythms, singing songs, gravitating to any keyboard in the room. That curiosity deserves direction.
- They need a structured beginner program. Random songs online aren’t a curriculum. A teacher introduces hand position, finger numbers, note values, tempo, dynamics, and technique in the right order, so bad habits never set in.
- Self-teaching has stalled. Apps and videos get children started, then leave them stuck. A weekly lesson with a teacher in the room keeps things focused and age-appropriate.
- They want to perform but feel shy. Recitals, small performances, and studio goals build confidence step by step. Students learn to prepare, play through mistakes, and walk off stage feeling proud.
- You want a path toward RCM, theory, or advanced study. Early lessons in reading, ear training, musical memory, and technical control build the foundation that supports everything later.
What Students Learn
A well-rounded piano education combines playing with broader musical understanding. Our program covers several areas at once, adjusted to each child’s age, level, and learning style.
Technique
Hand position, finger control, coordination, posture, and movement at the keyboard. We emphasize healthy mechanics from lesson one so problems don't build.
Music reading
Notes, rhythms, musical symbols, patterns, and the connection between written music and the keys. Stronger reading makes students more independent.
Rhythm and timing
Counting, rhythmic patterns, steady beat, and how notes fit together in time. Rhythm is fundamental to every style of music.
Repertoire
Complete pieces selected for the student's current level, challenging enough to encourage growth, not so hard they become discouraging. Classical is our foundation, not our ceiling: we also teach pop, rock, jazz, blues, film music, and musical theatre.
Practice skills
Knowing how to practise is itself a skill. We teach students to work through difficult passages, divide larger tasks into smaller sections, and focus on specific areas rather than replaying the same piece start to finish.
Ear training and theory
Listening, intervals, chords, key signatures, and musical structure. These build the understanding behind the playing.

Who We Teach
Ages five to seven (typical starting range)
Readiness beats starting age. We look for attention span, hand coordination, curiosity, and the ability to follow simple directions. For young children, fundamentals arrive through play. Looking for a program designed for even younger learners? See our preschool piano lessons.
Elementary-age students
Building note reading, coordination, rhythm, and the confidence to play independently. This is where most students move from simple melodies to real repertoire.
Pre-teens and teens
Teens want real song repertoire, movie themes, pop and rock, or a serious RCM and university audition path. We meet them where their interest already lives. See our full teen piano lessons program.

Questions Parents Ask
What are kids piano lessons?
Private one-on-one lessons for children taught by a qualified piano instructor, covering technique, reading, rhythm, repertoire, and practice skills.
What is the best age to start?
Many children start around five to seven, though some are ready earlier. We look at attention span, hand coordination, and interest before placing a child in lessons.
Do you offer a free trial lesson?
Yes. A real lesson, not a sales call. It helps us understand your child’s level, personality, and musical interests before anyone commits.
How long is each lesson?
30, 45, or 60 minutes, weekly. Young beginners start at 30 and move up as skills expand.
Can my child do RCM exams?
Yes. Our RCM preparation covers repertoire, technique, ear tests, sight reading, and theory. See our full RCM piano lessons page.
Are private lessons better than group classes for children?
Private lessons provide individual attention and flexible pacing. Group classes offer a shared learning environment. The best choice depends on the child’s learning style and goals.
Can I switch teachers?
Yes, at no extra cost. Chemistry matters as much as credentials.
Will I get progress reports?
Yes. Written reports show what’s been covered, what’s improving, and what comes next.
What if I need to cancel?
Give 24 hours notice and the credit returns to your account.
Do you offer in-home lessons?
Yes. Same teachers, same curriculum, at your house. See in-home piano lessons.
